How To Order Bourbon

Whether you are throwing a casual cocktail party or heading to your favorite bar, it's good to know how to order bourbon. This popular whiskey can be an intimidating choice, so use these tips to order bourbon like an expert.

  • The FIRST thing to consider is FLAVOR. Bourbon is aged in charred oak barrels and the main ingredient is corn. What gives bourbon flavor are the degrees of rye, barley, and wheat. Rye is spicier, barley is malty and wheat is sweet.

  • NEXT, choose which style you would your bourbon served. You should decide if you want your bourbon served neat, straight-up, or on the rocks. Neat means plain with no ice. Straight-up is served chilled. On the rocks is served over ice.

  • ALSO, consider how much you want to spend. You don't have to spend a lot of cash to get a nice glass of bourbon. There are rules in bourbon making that benefit the buyer. To be called straight bourbon, the whiskey must be aged at least two years, not be diluted below 80 percent and have no artificial flavors or colors. So don't be afraid to try the inexpensive stuff. You will still look like an expert.

  • SO, you've chosen a FLAVOR, STYLE, and BUDGET RANGE and now the bourbon has arrived. Take a moment. Give it a sniff. By smelling the bourbon you can prepare for the taste and also the burn. Take a small sip and proceed to enjoy.
